How to Download and Install FortiGate-VM Virtual Appliance
FortiGate-VM is a virtualized version of FortiGate, the flagship enterprise firewall from Fortinet. FortiGate-VM can be deployed on various hypervisors, such as VMware ESXi, KVM, Xen, Hyper-V, and AWS. FortiGate-VM provides the same security and networking features as the physical FortiGate appliances, such as firewall, VPN, antivirus, IPS, web filtering, application control, and more.
In this article, we will show you how to download and install FortiGate-VM on KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine), which is an open source virtualization technology built into Linux. You can use KVM to run multiple virtual machines on a single host machine, each with its own operating system and resources.
Downloading the FortiGate-VM Deployment Package
The first step is to download the FortiGate-VM deployment package from the Customer Service & Support site. To do this, you need to have a valid Fortinet account and a valid license for FortiGate-VM.
Follow these steps to download the FortiGate-VM deployment package:
Log into the Customer Service & Support site.
From the Download dropdown list, select VM Images to access the available VM deployment packages.
From the Select Product dropdown list, select FortiGate.
From the Select Platform dropdown list, select KVM.
Select the desired FortiOS version. There are two files available for download: the file required to upgrade from an earlier version and the file required for a new deployment.
Click the Download button and save the file. The file name will be something like FortiGate-VM64-KVM-v6-buildXXXX-FORTINET.out.kvm.qcow2, where XXXX is the build number.
For more information see the FortiGate product datasheet. You can also download the following resources for the firmware version:

Installing the FortiGate-VM Virtual Appliance
The next step is to install the FortiGate-VM virtual appliance on KVM. To do this, you need to have a Linux host machine with KVM installed and configured. You also need to have enough disk space, memory, and CPU cores for the virtual machine.
Follow these steps to install the FortiGate-VM virtual appliance:
Copy the downloaded FortiGate-VM deployment package file to the Linux host machine.
Create a new virtual machine using the virt-install command or a graphical tool such as virt-manager. Specify the following parameters:
Name: a unique name for the virtual machine, such as fortigate-vm.
OS type: Linux.
OS variant: generic.
RAM: at least 1024 MB (recommended 2048 MB).
vCPUs: at least 1 (recommended 2).
Disk: at least 3 GB (recommended 10 GB). Use the downloaded FortiGate-VM deployment package file as the disk image.
Network: at least one network interface (recommended two or more). Use bridge or NAT aa16f39245
